The voice line Mei recites in Chinese at Volskaya Industries and Nepal is an excerpt taken from "A Song of White Snow in Farewell to Secretary Wu Going Home" by Cen Shen, a Tang Dynasty poet.
The voice line "You have to let it go." may be a reference to the song "Let it go" from Disney's Frozen.
- The voice line "You have to let it go." is replaced with "You have to let it snow." if the "Mei-rry" skin is equipped, which is itself a possible reference to the song "Let it snow" by Dean Martin, which is often associated with the holidays.
In one of Mei's voice lines she compares Winston to Sun Wukong. It is a prominent folklore character better known to the western audience as the Monkey King, or Son Goku.
The seasonal event Mei's Snowball Offensive exclusive elimination lines feature parodies of other heroes' lines. For example:
