Escort, also refered to as Payload, is a game mode in Overwatch.

Game

Escort has two teams, the attacking team and the defending team. Each team is assigned one of the roles at random at the start of the match, and once the round is complete, the two teams swap roles.

At the start of each round, the defending team get some time to enter the main area and set up defenses before the attacking team are allowed out of their spawn area.

The central mechanic of Escort is a special object (the payload) which the attacking team aims to progress across the map toward an end point. This is achieved through keeping attacking heroes within range of the payload. Each attacking hero within range of the payload will increase its speed, up to a maximum of 3 heroes.[1]

Defending players can interact with the payload to contest its progress, stopping it from moving forward. The payload will roll back towards the start if no attacking players are near it.

At the start of the round a timer appears and begins counting down. Each Payload map contains a number of checkpoints, which when reached with the payload will add time onto or refresh the timer. If the timer expires, Overtime will be activated. This is represented by a short burning fuse which only lasts for a few seconds. However, as long as an attacking hero is within range of the payload, the fuse will not burn down. This presents the attacking team with the possibility of standing their ground long enough to reach the next checkpoint (or final goal), thus restarting the timer.

If the payload reaches its final goal, the attacking team has won; while if the timer and Overtime fuse expire, the defending team has won.

Escort maps often present winding courses, with the payload itself controlling its own steering through the map.
