This is a page for more in-depth strategy with Reaper, which includes tactics and strength in certain hero matchups.

Playing against ReaperEdit

Reaper relies on getting close to his enemies to be able to do much damage, so staying at range is recommended. If Reaper's Shadow Step is heard, call out his location or let the team know that he teleported so that they aren't caught off-guard.

Strong against ReaperEdit

Hanzo icon

Hanzo

Hanzo outranges Reaper in almost all situations. Due to Reaper's lack of speed, Hanzo can easily land a headshot on him, instantly killing Reaper. The only time Reaper is even close to a viable threat is when Hanzo is using his Scatter Arrow, as the smaller distance between the two can allow Reaper to catch up slightly.
Junkrat icon

Junkrat

Reaper must be at close range for his shotguns and passive to have much affect, and that just makes it easier for Junkrat to hit him. If caught in a Steel Trap, Reaper will have to use Wraith Form early, leaving him without an escape. The necessity for close-quarters combat also means Reaper is at high risk of dying to Total Mayhem.
McCree icon

McCree

McCree's range advantage against Reaper allows him to have the upper hand in a confrontation. If Reaper gets too close, McCree can stun him and shoot him in the head for massive damage, forcing him to use Wraith Form and flee. The damage output of his Peacekeeper is too high for The Reaping to have a major effect. McCree still needs to be wary of entering point-blank range when facing Reaper.
Pharah icon

Pharah

Reaper's Hellfire Shotguns will not be able to harm Pharah while she is in the air as it is limited to close range encounters. He can attempt to get close using his Shadow Step but Pharah can very easily spot him and bombard him with rockets or knock him off the edge with Concussive Blast. She can escape his Death Blossom using her Jump Jet and eliminate him with ease.
Widowmaker icon

Widowmaker

Windowmaker's hitscan weapon makes hitting Reaper all the easier. If Reaper tries to pressure Widowmaker by flanking, she can put a Venom Mine at the most popular flanking route, and reduce Reaper's health to 175 if he falls for the trap. After that, an easy headshot would finish him off.

Weak against ReaperEdit

Mercy icon

Mercy

Reaper sometimes flanks or lurks certain areas waiting to strike, and if he catches an opportunity to kill Mercy, she will die quickly if there are no escape options, as his high close-range damage will make quick work of her.
Orisa icon

Orisa

Orisa's massive hit box and her weak DPS makes her as a strong as a fly against Reaper. Even with her high fire rate, it is barely enough to counter The Reaping, and a couple headshots on Orisa is more than enough to kill her.
Reinhardt icon

Reinhardt

The only way Reinhardt can deal any damage to Reaper reliably is through his hammer or Charge. Both can easily be avoided or negated. In the space of time it takes Reinhardt to make one basic attack, Reaper will already have done about half of Reinhardt's health as damage.
Roadhog icon

Roadhog

Reaper's Hellfire Shotguns' damage output combined with his passive ability make him a very effective counter against Roadhog when it comes to close-range. His Hook and Scrap Gun combo won't deal enough damage to kill Reaper outright and he can simply keep regaining health through The Reaping which will help him survive the rest of Roadhog's onslaught and eventually kill him. The only sure way for Roadhog to kill a full-health Reaper is to hook him off the map or push him off using Whole Hog. Additionally, he can use his Wraith Form to prevent getting hooked altogether and/or escape Whole Hog. Reaper can also benefit more from Roadhog's Take a Breather more than Roadhog himself, as he will be unable to attack and Reaper's passive will allow him be healed as well.
Winston icon

Winston

Reaper has a slight but noticeable 50 HP advantage to most heroes, except in Reaper's case, he can quickly kill Winston with the Hellfire Shotguns' massive close-range damage, as they deal their maximum damage even outside of Winston's maximum effective range. Reaper needs a minimum of 5 shots to destroy Winston's barrier, and a minimum of 3 to kill him outright, meaning it's possible for Reaper to eliminate Winston's defensive option AND the scientist himself in one clip. Additionally, Reaper can outheal Winston's damage from The Reaping's healing power, and will be able outheal the damage if Winston is using Primal Rage and knocking him into a corner repeatedly.
Zarya icon

Zarya

Reaper's high damage in Zarya's range normally gives him the advantage over her, but if she has her barrier available and sufficient energy, she has a possibility of retaliating against him, but his passive will allow him to survive her attack unless she is at maximum energy. Additionally, his Wraith Form allows him to escape Graviton Surge.

Other notable heroes Edit

DVa icon

D.Va

Reaper's Hellfire Shotguns deal devastating damage up close, but Defense Matrix prevents him from doing any damage. If D.Va doesn't have Defense Matrix available, Reaper can quickly kill the mech due to its large hitbox and The Reaping helping him survive. Both of them have an ability for surviving the other's ultimate ability: Wraith Form for D.Va's Self-Destruct, and Defense Matrix for Reaper's Death Blossom.
Mei icon

Mei

If Reaper can get close enough to Mei, his high damage will finish her off before she gets the chance to freeze him. If he is close to being frozen, Reaper can use Wraith Form to reset the freeze timer and escape, however, Mei can use Ice Wall to block his escape route and will be able to damage him before he fully exits Wraith Form. If Reaper doesn't engage close enough, Mei can use the slow effect of her Endothermic Blaster to get out of his high-damage range and finish him off.
Sombra icon

Sombra

This is an interesting matchup. While Reaper is not hugely reliant on his abilities, and his passive cannot be hacked, when in a fight with others besides Sombra, he will need to be more cautious. Sombra can hack away his escape ability, Wraith Form. Other than in these situations, Reaper will most often win against Sombra.
Soldier76 icon

Soldier: 76

Due to Soldier: 76's advantage of range and a high damage secondary fire, Soldier: 76 will win if at a distance. However, if Reaper manages to get close, such as with Shadow Step, he can deal deadly damage to Soldier: 76. Even if Soldier: 76 places a Biotic Field, the damage from Hellfire Shotguns at close range will be too much.
Torbjörn icon

Torbjörn

Reaper will have a bit off difficulty traversing areas guarded by Torbjörn's Build Turret, and he has his Rivet Gun's primary fire to deal with him at range. If he gets into close range, then although Torbjörn's Armor Packs will mitigate the damage from Reaper's Hellfire Shotguns, his circular hitbox means Reaper will be able to hit most of the pellets from his shotgun blast, and The Reaping will allow him to win the fight most of the time.
Zarya icon

Zarya

Reaper's high damage in Zarya's range normally gives him the advantage over her, but if she has her barrier available and sufficient energy, she can retaliate effectively against him.

Playing with ReaperEdit

Reaper can either be a loner on the battlefield, accessing side routes and keeping low until behind enemy lines, or a team player, fighting enemies on the front lines. Other flankers who can back him up are helpful, and if choosing to fight in the front lines, heroes who can help him reach his targets by creating space are helpful.

Mei icon

Mei

Mei can use her Endothermic Blaster to slow down any target fleeing from Reaper, allowing him to catch up and easily kill them, and can freeze D.Va if she poses too much of a problem for him. His Death Blossom also pairs up with her Blizzard quite nicely.
Mercy icon

Mercy

Following Reaper while he's flanking is not recommended, but when he isn't, applying either of Mercy's beams to him allows him to be more aggressive, taking out key targets faster while surviving longer. A damage-boosted Death Blossom is also quite lethal if boosted in time. Additionally, both of her beams increase his durability by assisting The Reaping.
Winston icon

Winston

Although these two are natural enemies, with their mobility and high durability, Reaper and Winston make a formidable offensive.
Roadhog icon

Roadhog

Roadhog can pull in targets for Reaper and himself. Any enemies that are hooked within range of these close range damage dealers might as well kill them self, as they will be shredded to bits within the blink of an eye.
Zarya icon

Zarya

Zarya can help Reaper get into his comfort range with a Projected Barrier. Aside from that, their ultimate abilities combo well together. Death Blossom's radius is wide enough to damage all trappped enemies even if Reaper is not in the center of them. During Death Blossom, Zarya can project a barrier onto Reaper to prevent him from being killed or interrupted. Both Transcendence and Sound Barrier counter this combo, but Sound Barrier will still leave the team severely weakened.
