This is a page for more in-depth strategy with Soldier: 76, which includes tactics and strength in certain hero matchups.

Playing against Soldier: 76Edit

Soldier: 76's damage output and abilities are what grant him the most power. Taking away or nullifying them, such as using D.Va or Sombra, will make Soldier: 76 any average soldier on the battlefield.

Strong against Soldier: 76Edit

Hero

Details
DVa icon

D.Va

D.Va is able to negate all of Soldier: 76's damage with her Defense Matrix, allowing a teammate to easily finish him off, and will usually win in a 1v1 fight against him due to the knockback from her Boosters knocking him away from his Biotic Field. Her Defense Matrix is also a strong counter to Tactical Visor, as it will negate most of the damage done in its duration.
Orisa icon

Orisa

Orisa can place down a Protective Barrier to avoid Soldier: 76's damage, and will have another one ready by the time he is finally able to break it. If he decides to go around the barrier, Orisa has Fortify to reduce incoming damage, and can use Halt! to pull him into a position more advantageous for her.
Widowmaker icon

Widowmaker

Widowmaker generally outranges Soldier: 76. And due to the spread of his Heavy Pulse Rifle, he will have difficulty dueling Widowmaker from a distance when she can potentially kill him in 1 shot. He can place his Biotic Field down to lessen the chances of him dying, but it is not recommended as it forces him to stay within a certain area which will make him an easy target for Widowmaker.

Weak against Soldier: 76Edit

Pharah icon

Pharah

Soldier: 76's hitscan bullets of his Heavy Pulse Rifle means he can very effectively duel Pharah. If Pharah runs out of fuel for her jetpack, he can fire Helix Rockets as soon as she touches the ground. Soldier: 76 can use his Sprint to evade the rockets, minimizing the damage done to him, and return fire when she decides to reload. He can also very quickly punish a Pharah using Barrage at the wrong time.
Tracer icon

Tracer

Soldier: 76's Heavy Pulse Rifle and Helix Rockets will deal devastating damage to Tracer. In addition, he can stay in his Biotic Field to negate most of the damage Tracer can do to him. Landing Helix Rockets on Tracer will leave her with critical health. Meaning a few body shots (or 1 headshot) with his Heavy Pulse Rifle will kill her.

Other notable matchups Edit

Bastion icon

Bastion

In a 1v1 with Bastion in Configuration: Recon, Bastion will usually be the winner because of its armor giving an advantage, however, well-placed Helix Rockets will quickly turn the fight in Soldier: 76's favor. If it is in Configuration: Sentry and he is near cover, Soldier: 76 can freely shoot into Sentry Bastion and kill it with ease.
Genji icon

Genji

Soldier 76's accurate Pulse Rifle, Sprint, and Helix Rockets can mean that Genji will have little means to escape. If Genji has Deflect available, he will able able to turn all of Soldier: 76 power right back at him. Additionally, Genji's mobility makes him hard to pin down for Soldier: 76.
Reaper icon

Reaper

If Reaper gets close to Soldier: 76 and the latter misses Helix Rockets, Reaper will have the advantage even if Soldier: 76 has Biotic Field active. If Helix Rockets manage to damage Reaper, Soldier: 76 will have the upper hand.
Roadhog icon

Roadhog

Roadhog can hook Soldier: 76 allowing him to shoot at a very effective range. However, if Roadhog somehow fails to complete the finishing blow, he will have a very difficult time dealing with Soldier: 76, and can potentially be killed.
Sombra icon

Sombra

Although Sombra can Hack Soldier: 76 to get rid of his abilities, it is ultimately a wasted Hack, as while he is reliant on his abilites to be very effective, he isn't reliant ot the point where he is near-useless without them, and still has the upper hand against Sombra in a 1v1. Additionally, Hack cannot interrupt Tactical Visor.
Zarya icon

Zarya

Soldier: 76's damage can destroy Zarya's barrier in a reasonably short time, even without Helix Rockets, and can use his Biotic Field to mitigate damage from her Particle Cannon. With Sprint, he can quickly move away to gain a more advantageous position and shoot at Zarya from outside her effective range. However, due to Zarya's much more consistent fire power and much higher health, Soldier: 76 may find it more difficult if he is deprived of his abilities. Additionally, because of Soldier: 76's high damage output from Tactical Visor, she can gain a large amount of energy with her shields that can easily become a double edged sword for Soldier.

Playing with Soldier: 76Edit

Soldier: 76 can heal not just himself, but his allies. If he drops a Biotic Field, make sure you enter it as well if possible, as it charges his Tactical Visor. Because o his self-healing ability, he is a lower-priority target for healers. Soldier: 76 can do well on his own, but helping him is always useful. He can very effectively provide cover fire from high ground if everyone else is on low ground.

Good teammates Edit

Hero

Details
Ana icon

Ana

Unlike other healers, Ana doesn't have a reliable method of self-healing, as such, Soldier: 76's Biotic Field will help her out a lot. Tactical Visor is also a deadly candidate for a Nano Boost, and can swing the fight in the team's favor if done right. Against targets hit by Sleep Dart, he can use Helix Rockets to maximize damage against them.
Mercy icon

Mercy

Soldier: 76 is one of the best teammates for Mercy to have. He can move around the map quickly with Sprint (enhancing Mercy's mobility), he has consistent and reliable damage, and he can assist her with healing if she's under pressure. With Biotic Field active, Mercy can focus on damage boosting him to tear through enemies. A damage boosted Tactical Visor is very deadly, and can cause a teamwipe on its own.
Orisa icon

Orisa

Orisa can be a very helpful ally to have around. The consistent damage boost from Supercharger means that if a Mercy is on his team and Soldier: 76 activates Tactical Visor, she can worry about other teammates who might need help out on the battlefield. Also, the shielding can protect Soldier for the duration of his ultimate. Furthermore, Orisa has an easy, reliable way for Soldier: 76 to retrace his targets during his Tactical Visor, in case enemies do run astray.
Reinhardt icon

Reinhardt

Soldier: 76 can help win a battle of barriers by quickly pumping damage into an enemy Reinhardt's barrier. With the enemy barrier gone, Reinhardt is free to use Earthshatter without fear of being blocked, and Soldier: 76 can clean up the stunned targets with relative ease because of his high damage and fire rate, as well as Helix Rockets.
Roadhog icon

Roadhog

Because both Roadhog and Soldier: 76 have a self-healing ability, they can split off from the rest of their team without much pressure to flank the enemy team and deal high damage from an off-angle. If Roadhog fails to kill a target with his Chain Hook, Soldier: 76 can follow up and secure the kill. Additionally, Chain Hook can temporarily stop Defense Matrix if it lands successfully, and gives both time to get D.Va out of her mech so they can run wild.
Sombra icon

Sombra

Sombra can instantly remove all hindrances to Soldier: 76 and his Tactical Visor with one correctly-timed and placed EMP. Outside of EMP, Sombra can Hack troublesome enemies such as Genji or D.Va to let Soldier: 76 have an easier time dealing with them, or to prevent his attack from being hampered.
Zarya icon

Zarya

While Zarya can give Soldier: 76 a Projected Barrier along with all its benefits, Zarya's most useful asset for him is her ability to counter D.Va, who is a massive thorn in his side. Once D.Va is out of her mecha, Soldier: 76 can go almost uncontested.
